Anesthesia

Surgical anesthesia can be tricky with ANY dog breed.  Picards are no different.  There have been reported anecdotal cases of severe reactions to anesthesia and even death in Picards.

We recommend that you tell your veterinarian to treat the Picard as a sight hound and NOT a typical shepherd.  The body fat/muscle ratio is more similar to sighthounds than typical shepherds.

We have two documented severe reactions involving the use of morphine as a pre-anesthesia drug. So please notify your veterinarian of this as well.
